Heaving Line

TITANPARACORD.COM -

Heaving Line
Heaving Line
A Heaving Line is a simple, moderately heavy, heaving knot used on a lightweight line used on ships to establish a connection with people on another ship, the shore, or even shipmates who have gone overboard. The knot adds extra bulk and weight, making it easier to throw.

Tying the Heaving Line

It is tied by making a bight, then wrapping the working end around a bunch of times. When you get to the end of the working end, put it inside the bight and tighten by pulling on the standing part….

Using a Heaving Line

If a Heaving Line is joined directly to the main hawser it can be impossible to detach it when the hawser is loaded. Ashley recommends the use of an intermediate short length of rope. This allows the Line to be detached from the intermediate rope and reused.
